Popping out Final sketches and Idea

The 'Popping Out' Project was the final brief of the visual communication module and involved us adding together all the elements we had learnt from the different briefs. The brief included some specific elements that must be included, as seen below in the screenshot taking from the power point. As well as these requirements we were also to use a existing character that we had obsevered in our local folk project. We were unable to change their name or information that we had given them however we were able to adapt and develop thew charter further.

To begin, I created a detailed digital mind map of all my ideas from individual character, to possible narratives and journeys swell as locations and extra characters. This was useful starting step as it allowed me to create ideas in. short space of time whilst also showing my thought process. From this mind map I decided on choosing Mark the bin man. I chose Mark as I liked how my original sketch had a connection to his job and felt this is something I could play with further.

Once I had chosen my main character I began to take notes on my phone with possible narratives of his journey. Below shows my final ideas, with a panel by panel guide as to what would happen on Mark's Journey. The Idea of the project was to create a journey in which the character pops out for a purpose, this could be to get lunch or go shopping. However, I wanted to play on the idea of my character's job therefore I developed it into a journey throughout his day, therefore instead of 'popping out' it would technically be 'popping out to work' . From here I started working on the requirements, for my recognisable building I actually chose a famous monument, Stone Henge. I chose the Stone henge as it is located in beautiful Wiltshire, a more country remote location. I felt this suited my character and felt it fit well with the festive story. As for characters I added Mark a companion, Snowy his dog who sits in his van during his work day. I felt this added a fun element to the narrative and told the viewer a bit more about my character. I also chose to feature an older lady who was possibly one of his customers. I wanted to play on this idea and create her in a way that made he look like Mrs Claus as my narrative has a festive theme towards it therefore wanted to add different elements which would really make the reader think. As for the chosen animals I wanted to create a panel that would show the main character helping a row of ducks cross the road by stopping oncoming traffic. I felt this had an element of humour whilst showing the reader that Mark is seen as caring and compassionate.

Once I had thought of my ideas and developed them it was time to begin thinking of the visual elements of the story. I began by sketching Mark in a range of different positions and profiles. This was an important part of the creation process as it allowed me to really think about the character and how he is seen by others. Within this I played around with colours and mark making swell as looking at other elements such as snowing the dog as well as the van in which we see Mark drive. This almost creates a visual character profile and was a good resource for me to refer back to throughout the project.

After producing my visuals for the character it was timer me to think about the individual panels that I would be creating. I began by drawing a range of sketch style thumbnails, thinking about composition and how it is important to bring a connection with the reader. Below shows my finalised thumbnails all In a sequence of my chosen narrative. All these sketches were completed digitally using procreate. I chose to work digitally for my thumbnails as I was then able to load them in for a base drawing when creating the finalised panel. I was happy with how these individual thumbnails came out and think they communicated the ideas of my original plan.
