Popping Out Final Book and mockups

After finishing the main panels for the popping out project, I decided I wanted to develop my design further and create a final piece that really brings the narrative together. Therefore using my artwork I started creating mockups of different outcomes in which display my final artwork.

I had two main ideas of ways which I would want to show the panels therefore I started with my original idea of a concertina book. The concertina book involved the paper being folded in opposite directions to create a zig zag effect. I wanted the images to be fairly big so the detail could still be seen by the viewer. To do this I printed the artwork on a landscape piece of A3 splitting the panels into a set of two with the four different drawings making one panel. Each panel measure to be 10x10cm making it even throughout the whole book. Once this was printed I definitely felty like it could be bigger, maybe using 20x20 however, once assembled I felt the whole design looked great and worked well. However,I did still feel there was something missing with my narrative.

Therefore the second idea I wanted to explore was the idea of a simple book. The book, although may look simple took a while to plan as the pages must be flipped and arranged in a certain way that insures that it is still in order when but together. To do this I used photoshop as I felt it was the best software for this problem and allowed me to experiment with the arrangement quite freely. Once finally working out the order in which they need to be printed I began printing on thick card putting it through twice as the paper was printed double sided with the panels. Below shows some photos of what the book looks like, as you can see it is a very rough copy and looks messy with the way it has been folded and also the size difference in some of the pages. Therefore when it comes to creating the final one it is important that I fold it neatly swell as line the pages up correctly.

Although I was happy with the overall design I did feel like there was something missing when it came to the book. It felt too open and exposed therefore I wanted to create a cover which would title it as well as hold it all together. To do this I created extra artwork using the measurements which I had chosen (28cmx14cm). This is shown below along with the type I created to sit on top. For this cover I wanted to create a design hat included all of the elements I used throughout the narrative for example you an see the old lady's cottage in the corner, along with the silhouette of Santa flying across the sunlit sky. I felt this piece was very successful and helped tie it together like

Once I was happy with my finalised designs it was time for me to print the final outcome. This time I chose to do it more carefully sign scissors to delicately create a crease making it easier fold when it came to putting it together. I'm really happy with how my overall product came out and felt it looked really effective. I also felt I captured the aims of the brief using my own style swell as the skills that I had learnt throughout the module. If I was to improve one thing I would go back through each panel correcting any details that may come across as messy, I would also love to experiment with the binding of the book and how each bind would change the overall design.
