Martha Napier is an illustrator originally born in the Midwest however is now located between Chicago and Newyork. Her work is filled with vivid colours and bold watercolour strokes all of which capture energy and movement within the texture of inspiration. Her work inspired by fashion and lifestyle as she captures a range of garments full of texture, colour pattern and character. She mainly works using watercolours however also uses markers, pencils and acrylics this can e seen as she mixes media to create different layers and add detail to the artwork. Napier has worked for clients such as David Yurman, Barney’s New York and even The New Yorker Magazine.
Above is an example of her fashion based artwork, as seen above shows five models all dressed in glamorous outfits full of colour and texture. I like Napier’s work as she uses a range of different mark making techniques. This is perfect for the 101 marks project, as I try and explore different marks it’s important to research artists that work in a similar way by exploring textures and how marks can be layered to create bold images. I specifically chose this image as I feel it’s a perfect example of Napier’s style and also use of media whilst also combines a wide range of marks in which make up the final image
