Final popping out panels

The final panels of my popping out project are shown here below (all in order).

The first image we see Mark travelling down the Wiltshire road towards the silhouette of the Stonehenge as he drives to work during early morning sunrise. This was the first drawing I worked on out of the eight, and involved the starting process of the thumbnail as see in the other blog. I particularly love this panel as feel it's full of texture as well as interesting marks and colour choices. It definitely set the vibe that I wanted to create for my narrative and gave me a good base to work and develop from.

The second panel I created for the narrative introduces my chosen characteri, as we see him carrying the bin towards his van ready for emptying and cleaning. In this piece I wanted the main focus to be on him so the reader can really get to know the character and his job. Like the first, I made sure to focus on the mark making and texture by using a range of digital brushes to create different styles and feel for the environment. I also like this piece as it really introduces the Christmas element that I wanted to bring into my narrative, I chose to add this festively feel as I felt it would creat a connection with the viewer as it gives them a warm feeling. This Christmas feel can be felt through the candy-cane lights that hang on the cottage behind, as well as the Santa hat that my character, Mark wears throughout the book.

The third panel I create really introduces the journey in which they’re going on as well as introducing Mark’s dog snowy who often comes to work with him sitting in the passenger side of the van. This panel also follows the requirements for at least one panel showing a woodlands or park area, as in this drawing we see Mark and Snowy driving in a remote woodland customer to their next customer of the day. I particularly like this piece as I love the colours of the scenery of the background as feel the pine trees compliment the fading sky which makes it stand out just that bit more. I also like the use of a digital stippling brush which is used throughout these panels in the sky to add texture. I chose to use this as think it adds an extra element that creates depth whilst also resembling fast falling snow.

The fourth drawing i created was used to give the reader more of a connection towards my main character, Mark. In this picture we see MArk helping a row of ducks cross the road and stopping oncoming traffic from hitting them. I feel this has an element of humour however also shows the viewer thar MArk is seen as caring of everyone, including animals. However, although this is one of my least favourite panels due to lack of detail in some area, I really like the sky and how it seems almost darker from the last illustration. This gives the reader an idea of time and how it is passing throughout the panels.

The fifth drawing I created for the Popping out and also the introduction of the third character, Mark’s customer. I especially like this panel as I love the sky with the pink fluffy clouds as it fall to evening and also the small cottage that i feel reflects my characters personality. I also created this character intending for her to have a resemblance to mrs Claus, I felt this would fit the narrative and add to the festive theme whilst maybe bringing some joy to the viewer.

Now the sixth slide begins to show the day wrapping up for Mark as he visits his local site in which deposits the rubbish that he collected from customers. This follows on with the Christmas theme as we a Santa silhouette fly across the light of the moon and darkening sky, as well as Mark seen to be carrying a bin back over his right shoulder which could be see as toy sack giving him more of that Santa appearance.
I really like this slice however feel there is some lack of details, Hereford if i had time to improve I would work back into the stone maybe adding more tonal definition.

In the seventh slide we see snowy stood at the door of their cottage ready to go in after log day. I particularly like this post, as it keeps to that warm feel that I wanted to create as well as using a lot of red and green to reflect the time of year. I like this panel as feel there are lots of details, from the name on the post box, to the wellie boots on the floor and gives the viewer more information to pick out about our main characters and his companion.

Now the final slide wraps up our narrative of Mark and Snowy’s day as we see them both sat in the warmth of a fire, Mark in this arm chair and snowy on his bed. I particularly like this final panel as i feel it finishes perfectly showing the end of Mark’s  journey throughout the day seeing him in his ideal environment. I also like the mark making in this panel from the wood on the floor to the blended pencil i use over the fire to try create some luminous flames.

Overall, I was really happy with final panels for this project, I feel they reflect my original ideas and really play with this idea of a festive journey throughout the day. I was particular happy with the markmaking i used throughout as felt it added a range of texture just by using different digital brushes. If i could improve on this project, i would just revisit some panels making sure there is more tonal definition as well as small details such as on the brick walls.
