Cathedral project

The second brief we were given related back to the 101 marks project. The idea was to create an illustration of a cathedral using only three marks from our chosen 101. The illustration was to be contrasted from our head as no research was allowed. This proved to be rather difficult when thinking about details and architectural elements.

Above shows my first drawing I created for this project. For this illustration I chose to work in finaliser using three of my favourite marks as seen in the top left corner of the sketchbook page. I chose these three marks specifically as I felt they would work best to create an illustration. This illustration prooved to b e rather quick and sketchy however, I liked how it turned out and felt it was rather successful considering I was only working with three marks. If I was to improve this I would work back in maybe opening more time to add some details such as the planes in the windows and also the layers of bricks on the wall.

The second drawing had a slightly different style and approach. For this I used charcoal to create textual marks which gave almost a dark moody look to the overall drawing. My three chosen marks were a simple line using a thinner piece of charcoal, a brick style pattern and also a clover looking shape which happens to be a common feature on church and cathedral architecture. Although I did like this piece I felt there were elements where the proportions felt off and lacked detail as well as strong line work where needed making it feel slightly messy in places.

MY third and final drawing had a more simplistic semi abstract feel to it. I chose to use Indian ink and focused on the idea of the stained glass window. My first mark was actually an ink wash which can be seen as a base layer for the window giving that effect of glass beneath the panes. I liked how this mark looked as felt it added depth and also a sense of contrast within the image. The second line that I chose was a simple ink line with brush size 3. I chose this line as I felt it would work for element where it needed more detail and ,one work. This mark helped me create structure into the illustration by showing more key elements of the architecture. The third mark I used was a platter style mark. I created this simply using watered down ink and brush before spraying tapping it around the page. This mark appears quite abstract however, I felt it would work well for this drawing to add further texture and tonal definition. I also feel it works well for the cathedral style as it creates this texture that you could images to be moss or other marking on the old cathedral bricks.

Overall I was happy with how the three separate drawings turned out and felt they communicated my idea pf marks and how they can be used to create specific drawings. I found this brief challenging due to the lack ofd research however I felt it pushed me out of my comfort zone by experimenting and problem solving with the chosen marks.
