The 101 Marks project was the first brief of the Visual Communication module. The idea was to create 101+ marks all different, this could be in terms of media, thickness, shapes and even pattern. I began my project by using a rage of different medias picking which I would like to include in my project. I began with oil pastel before moving onto fine liner, charcoal, pencil, permeant marker and Indian ink.
Below shows an example of a sketchbook page taken from project. This was taken from my charcoal pages and could possibly be one of my favourite layouts. I like this page as it has lot of pattern elements, from the semi abstract leaves that could be seen as a similar shape to matisse shapes, to the loose mark making on the right page which was created by leaning my charcoal stick on its side and pulling it down in a wave like motion. A lot of my favourite marks included a pattern style element as I like how they sat together to form a bigger mark/picture. Overall I believe I created around 200 different marks all different in shape and style. This created a hard job when it came down to choosing specifically 101 marks. However in the series of photos below you can see the majority of my favourite marks with my chosen ones being marked with a (*) . Overall I was happy with this project as felt it allowed me to really experiment with my work as well as push me out of my comfort zone. It has also allowed me to find some marks which I will use in future projects and in my work as whole.
As well as producing a range of marks I also researched into five contemporary illustrators all of who I feel use mark making in a unique way within their style. It was important for me to research these artists as it allowed me to create my own ideas inspired from their work. These individual research can be found on my blog as separate posts.
