Kavel Rafferty is a British Illustrator currently living and working in Kent. She combines bold flat colour with sharp line work to create depth and dimension. She also uses a range of found imagery and combines it with print and paint to create a textual piece full of charm. Her inspiration comes from vintage shops and flea markers all of which add a nostalgic vibe and style.
I chose to look at Rafferty as a key artist for my 101 marks project, as she uses a range of inspirational mark makings all of which are placed and combined together to create an overall piece full of unique texture and ideas. As well as flat colour Rafferty also plays around with pattern such as stripes, spots and cross hatching details. I like this use of pattern as it is something that inspires my own work as whilst working on this project I wanted to include the idea of pattern and how they could be used as one of my 101 marks.
As well as creating her own artwork Rafferty has worked with a range of clients from The Times, Vogue Uk, BBC, Penguin publishing and many more. Not only does this show how respected her work is as an artist but also how it fits with its purpose for example an editorial style illustration.
