Quentin Blake Research -101 Marks

Quentin Blake possibly the most famous British illustrator, was born on the outskirts of London in 1932 and has an impressive career from an early age drawing for magazines such as Punch and The Spectator whilst also building his career in children’s books. Blake known for his unique sketchy style illustrated for writers such as Russell Hoban, John Yeoman and RoaldDahl and has received many awards and honours for his illustration work.

Blake’s work is an inspiration for my 101 marks project as he includes such a unique style within his line work that could provide such inspiration for my own personal style. I like his sketchy style and use of colour as he portrays characters and environments in a way that create a visual language within itself whilst attracting the audience and drawing them into the story.

This illustration above is a strong example of Blake’s best work. I chose this illustration in particular as I love the colours he has chosen to create these marks, the purpose of a children’s book is to engage the reader and transport them on a new adventure. These colours give that fun element which will attract the child by creating a warm friendly environment. I also feel this this illustration shows his famous use of line work in which outlines all characters an objects in a sketchy but effective way. This adds character to the illustration whilst also providing more detail and information about the environment in which he has created. This is a good example for my project as it shows a new way I would chin could influence my own practice whilst also showing the importance of mark making and how it can change an illustration.
