Not just a tree

As part of our visual communication module we have been set a range of mini briefs all of which are allowing us to experiment with new ideas and media’s. This week our project was called “Not just a tree”

The project is based and inspired by Canadian illustrator John Klaassen, an artist known for his unique style and particularly the way he presents trees. For this we were to pick one out of  60,065 species and focus on how we can create this tree in a range of different styles and media’s by looking at colour shape and even elements of the tree such as the fruit or blossom.

Above shows my sixteen chosen illustrations taken from m favourite pages of my sketchbook. I chose these particular illustrations as I feel like all show different uses of media and style as well as focusing on individuals details. For example when experimenting with the different media’s as well as focusing on the tree I would also then go on to produce a drawing of the fruit, the branch and even the individual leaves. I chose to do this as I felt it really helped show the style as well as distinguish the characteristics of my chosen tree (lemon tree). When thinking about my trees I really wanted to incorporate the idea of colour as I felt it was a key feature of the lemon tree. The lemon tree is considered to be a magic tree used to call good energies and clear bad vibrations whilst being a symbol of wellbeing and positive surroundings. I feel this positive emotion can be felt within the yellow fruit and bright lime coloured leaves, both very happy and warm colours. I incorporated this into a few of my designs including the third image in which i used fine liner and pen only focusing on the yellow colour to create a strong contrast and draw the viewers attention.
